Navigating Ireland’s Updated Stamp 0: The Visiting Academic Route
For tenured professors on sabbatical, senior researchers, and esteemed faculty invited to collaborate with Irish universities, a temporary relocation to Ireland offers an incredible professional and personal opportunity.
The dedicated immigration pathway for these short-term, non-salaried academic placements is the Stamp 0 Visa (Visiting Academic).
However, as the Irish Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) applies increasingly strict compliance measures across all visa categories in 2026, the application process for visiting academics has become highly rigid. If you are planning an academic secondment to Ireland, here are the core conditions and limitations you must navigate before you arrive.
The 12-Month Limit and Overseas Payroll
Unlike standard employment permits or the Hosting Agreement Scheme (which is designed for salaried researchers directly employed by Irish institutions), the Stamp 0 for visiting academics is strictly a temporary permission.
Duration: The visa is granted for a maximum period of 12 months. It is not intended to be a long-term residency solution and cannot be renewed indefinitely. Furthermore, time spent on a Stamp 0 does not count as "reckonable residence" toward Irish citizenship.
Source of Income: You must remain on the payroll of your overseas home institution or be funded by an independent, external organization. You are strictly prohibited from receiving a salary from the Irish host university or engaging in any other business, trade, or profession within the State.
The Dual-Institution Requirement
The ISD requires unequivocal proof that your stay is a formal, financially supported academic endeavor. You cannot self-declare your academic status; you must provide comprehensive documentation from both sides of the arrangement:
From Your Home Institution: A formal letter specifying your current position, confirming your sabbatical or secondment, and guaranteeing that your salary will continue to be paid by them for the duration of your stay in Ireland.
From the Irish Host Institution: A formal invitation letter confirming the purpose of your visit, outlining your working arrangements or research collaboration, and explicitly stating the start and end dates of your placement (which must not exceed 12 months).
The In-State Application Ban and Financial Compliance
A critical procedural rule that catches many academics off guard is the strict ban on applying from within the country. You cannot arrive in Ireland as a tourist or general visitor and then apply for a Stamp 0. The entire application process must be initiated and approved while you are outside of the State.
Furthermore, you are legally bound to be entirely financially self-sufficient. To prove this, you must submit at least six months of recent bank statements and payslips. You must also secure comprehensive private medical insurance for your entire stay. This policy must provide full cover in private Irish hospitals; standard travel insurance policies will result in an immediate rejection.
Sponsoring Your Family: A Higher Threshold
If you are a lecturer on a sabbatical, you are permitted to apply to bring your spouse and children with you to Ireland. However, this is not an automatic right.
To bring dependents, you must prove that your overseas salary is high enough to support your entire family without any reliance on the Irish State. You must secure comprehensive private healthcare policies for every accompanying family member and provide proof of suitable accommodation in advance.
Crucially, your spouse will not be permitted to work in Ireland while residing as a dependent on your Stamp 0 permission.
